BumGenius – Genius Cloth Bums

BumGenius are among the most reputable cloth nappies (diapers) around, and they are best-selling around the world. There are two main types – the sized nappies, which are available in XS, Small, Medium and Large and these have inserts attached to them, making them all-in-one diapers; and the birth-to-potty, one size fits most type, which are adjustable with poppers from around 8lb to 35lb plus. These come with two inserts, one adjustable and one for newborns, and in the later stages, both of these inserts can be used together to boost absorbancy.

These diapers are in a variety of pastel and bright colours: Zinna (bright pink), Blossom (pastel pink), Moonbeam (bright blue), Butternut (bright yellow/orange), White, Bubble (pale lilac), Noodle (pale yellow), Sweet (pale grey), Grasshopper (pale green), Twilight (pale blue). And also in some limited edition prints called the artist series, which are: Eiffel Tower, Jet Setter, Concrete Jungle and more.

The Version 4 diapers are available in both applix fastening and popper, though versions before this were applix only.

Please see my article on cloth nappies for further advice on starting with reusable diapers.

Fitted Nappies With Wraps

Fitted Nappies With Wraps

One of the most popular types of reusable or cloth nappy (diaper) system is using fitted nappies, made out of either cotton, microfleece or bamboo, with a wrap over the top.

Nappies usually are available in two sizes – small, suitable from newborn to six months, or large, suitable from four months to around two years or longer. They are usually white or cream and fasten with velcro (known as applix) or left open so that nappi nippas or safety pains fasten them.

These will last your baby around three to four hours during the day, though the bamboo types are more absorbent. You can use a liner if you wish, either paper (which are disposable) or fleece.

Some brands of fitted nappies that are popular are Little Lambs, Tots Bots and Bumbles.

Wraps are needed to go over the nappies, and these are usually available in three sizes – small to cover the small fitted nappies, and medium or large that fit over the large nappies. You will need to change the wrap after every three or four nappies are changed.

Some popular makes of wrap or cover are: Blueberry Coverall, Mother-Ease Rikki or Airflow, and Gen-Y.

Cloth Nappies For Newborns - The Best

I have just finished writing an article on the best cloth nappies for newborn babies.

I would personally recommend using prefolds during the first few weeks, with some cute and funky wraps, along with some two part fitted nappies for night times, because, fingers crossed, your baby will be sleeping for longer and you will need something to withstand the extra pee.

My personal favourites are:
Bambino Mio prefolds - you can buy a set of these which includes 12 prefolds, 3 wraps and 10 liners. The liners are not necessary but you may like to use them.

Little Lamb fitted nappies - these are available in cotton, microfleece or bamboo and bamboo is the most absorbant whilst microfleece is the softest.

Thirsties Duo Wraps - my personal favourite wrap, they have some very cute designs.

See my article for further and fuller details on this subject.
